And another pleasant Surrey Bower,

Threefold each in the other closd;

DIE KRISTALLKAMMER
Das Mädchen fing mich auf dem Feld
Wo fröhlich tanzte ich allein
Zog mich in ihre Kammer mit
Schloß mich mit goldnem Schlüssel ein.
Die Kammer ist aus Gold erbaut
Drin Perlenglanz, kristallne Pracht
Und öffnet sich auf eine Welt
Und eine zarte Mondscheinnacht.
Ein andres England sah ich da
Samt London, Tower, Kasematten –
Die Themse, Hügelketten fern
Und Surreys heitre Laubenschatten.
Ein andres Mädchen, das ihr glich
Durchsichtig, lieblich, leuchtend klar
Jede dreifach im Ebenbild –
O wie nun Furcht auch Wohltat war!
O welches Lächeln glühte mir
Selbdritt! Wie Flammen ich verging.
Zum holden Munde neigt ich mich
Und Küsse dreifach ich empfing.
Das Herz der Welt ich greifen wollt
Mit heißer Glut & Flammenhand –
Zerbrach die Kammer aus Kristall
Und weinend wie ein Kind ich stand:
Ein Kind in Tränen auf dem Feld
Die bleiche Frau erschöpft von Qual.
Befreit nun klagte ich dem Wind
Der weiterzog durchs Jammertal.
