The Old Stoic

Riches I hold in light esteem
And love I laugh to scorn
And lust of fame was but a dream
That vanished with the morn –

And if I pray, the only prayer
That moves my lips for me
is – ‘leave the heart that now I bear
And give me liberty!’

Yes, as my swift days near their goal
’Tis all that I implore –
Through life and death, a chainless soul,
With courage to endure!

Der alte Stoiker


Reichtümer schätze ich wohl kaum,
der Liebe lache ich,
und Lust am Ruhm, das war ein Traum,
der mit dem Morgen wich –

Und wenn ich bete – eigentlich
gibt es nur ein Gebet:
gib los mein Herz, befreie mich!
Noch trage ichs, ’s ist spät –

Ja, meine Tage fliegen bloß
dem Ziele zu – ich flehe,
daß meine Seele kettenlos
Leben und Tod bestehe!
